Creating Awareness of Brain Injury Awareness Month And Honoring Those Who Live With BI

For years, March has been earmarked as the month to honor those living with brain injury. Brain Injury (BI) Awareness Month aims to:

  • Acknowledge and celebrate those individuals who live daily with the challenges posed by brain injury – they are truly health warriors and health heroes! Plus, acknowledge the important roles played by caregivers, family, loved ones, healthcare providers, and equipment providers, like our organization, in helping the individual living with BI enjoy the best possible life quality
  • Share information about brain injury to educate the general public about what brain injury is, and its impact on individuals and families in our communities
  • Provide information on resources available to those living with brain injury and their caregivers and loved ones
  • Support fundraising for research and advocacy related to brain injury

What Causes Brain Injury (BI)?

As our friends at Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) reminded us via their March 2026 e-newsletter addressing Brain Injury Awareness Month, this month “is the time to recognize millions of people living with the ‘silent or invisible’ impacts of brain injury. Whether caused by a stroke, a fall, a car accident, or an illness, an acquired brain injury can fundamentally change a person’s life in an instant.”

Where Can I Get Support Related To Brain Injury (BI)?

OSCIL offers a safe, welcoming space for BI survivors to connect, share experiences, and learn new strategies for daily living, and individuals can attend virtually! Learn more about this support group, as well as their other support group for caregivers, family, and healthcare providers impacted by BI or providing BI-related care by visiting their website at https://www.oscil.org/peer-support.

What Type of Medical Equipment Is Essential To And Improves The Life Quality of Someone With BI?

As we outlined and explained in more detail in a past blog post about equipment from which individuals with BI and their caregivers benefit, the particular type of equipment that an individual with BI and their caregivers need to ensure the best possible life quality depends on the individual’s specific short-term and long-term recovery and situation; however, some common equipment used by individuals living with BI and their caregivers that, we, as providers of medical equipment, offer include:

  • Patient lifts that allow for individuals to be safely and comfortably moved from one location to the other, such as from a bed to a bathroom
  • Stair lifts that allow mobility-challenged individuals to safely and easily ride up and down vs. climb/walk staircases
  • Vertical platform lifts that allow those in a wheelchair or who need to use a walker to access the outdoors/outside of their home
  • Ramps that provide a safe way for individuals in wheelchairs, or who use walkers, to enter or exit their home
  • Grab bars and handrails that provide support and prevent falls for those challenged by muscle or joint weakness or by balance issues

We are honored to be able to provide such equipment to families and individuals impacted by BI for use in their home, but also to group homes and day programs serving individuals challenged by brain injury.
