How And Why Disability Is Celebrated

In our most recent blog post about celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), we talked about the importance of this act to all those living with disability and those who love and care for them. Because of obvious synergies, along with the ADA's anniversary, Disability Pride Month and Disability Awareness Day are celebrated in the U.S. in July by many. And, most celebrate Disability Awareness Day the same day as the ADA's anniversary, but also celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October.

Why Disability Pride Month vs. Disability Awareness Month?

Because our team of patient lift and DME experts here at Lift & Care Systems collaborates regularly with families and individuals challenged by disability, as well as organizations serving those living with disability, we know how inspirational, determined-to-live-a-full-life, and emotionally strong those living with disability can be. As we shared in our "Disability Superstars" blog post, the number of individuals living with disability who fight hard each and every day to live their best possible life, and to help others living with similar challenges live their best quality life, is countless.

Wondering why emphasis in the month of July is on "pride vs. awareness?" We thought this blog post by Specially Gifted explained the difference beautifully by sharing the following words of a disability activist: “I often think of the term awareness as something that we use when we’re talking about something that we want to solve, a problem to be fixed. Disability is not a problem to be fixed, it’s a culture, it’s an identity. It’s something that so many of us celebrate.”

We've been thrilled to see so many people posting about and promoting Disability Pride Month recently -- both individuals living with disability, as well as individuals who don't-- and celebrating the very rich lives that numerous individuals living with disability live and their many accomplishments and contributions to our community and society.

Won't You Join Us In Celebrating Disability Pride Month?
