Supporting The Independence And Dignity Of The Disabled
Whether you or your loved one were born with a disability or acquired it later in life, we here at Lift & Care Systems share your goal for yourself, or for those for whom you care, to lead the greatest quality of life, independence, and dignity while living with disability. Three capabilities that support a feeling of dignity in all human beings – including individuals living with developmental disability or physical disability or both – are the ability to:
- get in and out of bed and move to other rooms of a house or apartment
- access a bathroom toilet, as needed
- bathe and shower regularly
As outlined below, there are ways we can work together to ensure you or your loved one has the proper means in place to allow for all of the capabilities listed above – giving both disabled individuals and their care givers greater independence, dignity, and life quality and reducing worry about falls or other accidents.
Whether you are dealing with long-term/life-long disability or a temporary, short-term disability, we are here for you and your loved one and want to help! We have helped countless individuals living with disabilities they were either born with (congenital disabilities) or acquired later in life (sudden disabilities/new disabilities), such as cerebral palsy (CP), spinal cord injury (SCi), quadriplegia, hemiplegia, paraplegia, stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), acquired brain injury (ABI), multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy (MD), neuromuscular disease, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) (note that some of these disabilities can both appear at birth or appear later on). Our team can consult with you to make recommendations for what we believe will be the best durable medical (DME) products and lift systems for your or your loved one’s particular needs.
Keep in mind that while the focus of this blog post is to share information on various DME and lift products that provide improved life quality to individuals living with disability, many of these products can be used to support seniors aging in place safely as well.
We think you’ll be really surprised when you visit the products section of our site to see the large, diverse selection of lift and support products that are available to help you or your loved one live the best possible life. Products we bet you didn’t even know existed!
Products For Getting In and Out of Bed, Including Patient Lifts
Depending on the nature of it, individuals living with disability may require a patient lift, such as a ceiling lift, to help a caregiver safely transport them from their bed to another room in their house, including the bathroom. If a disability is thought or expected to be temporary, or technical logistics don’t allow for a permanent ceiling system, we can provide a lift that is free-standing like Surehand’s Freedom Bridge. Some of our customers have been in a position where they could not install a lift to a ceiling because they rented versus owned their home and landlords did not support a ceiling lift installation, or because they planned to move in the near future. In addition, some customers simply did not have a strong structure to attach a ceiling lift to, or their tall or cathedral ceilings made it more difficult, costly, and less attractive to install a ceiling lift. In the aforementioned cases, the Freedom Bridge was the perfect solution!
If you and your loved one are able to raise yourself from your bed with just a little support and non-human assistance, then one of the SuperPole™, Smart-Rail™, or SuperTrapeze™ products we offer may be all that is needed to assure you or your loved one can get in or out of bed safely, i.e., without a fall. And, the SuperBar™ products we offer can help anyone living with disability raise themselves out of a seated position in any room of the house, plus provide support and stability when wanting to stand in a particular room, like the kitchen or family room.
Products For Safe Toilet Use
We offer numerous bathroom safety products to support both user wellness and freedom. Like the SuperPoles™ that we offer and mentioned above, PT Rail™ is an easily-installed support system you may want to put in place within the bathroom to provide dignified toilet access and independence to someone living with disability.
Products For Bathing and Showering Safely
No-one should have to worry about their own safety or that of a loved one when it pertains to the basic human need to feel and look clean. In addition to the SuperPole(TM), SuperBar™ products mentioned above, we offer easy-to-mount “grab bar” and bathroom safety accessories that help to prevent falls in disabled individuals and keep them safe.
